About

RICK GLEASON

Rick Gleason is a Las Vegas-based writer, a family historian and the father of six. He’s an Air Force veteran, and in another life, a television news reporter and anchor. Later, among a variety of careers, he was a radio news anchor and talk show host. He grew up in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., but has lived his entire adult life in the West, mostly the Pacific Northwest.

He lived in Seattle, WA for 32 years where he discovered the game of poker in 2009, and promptly decided to take it seriously.

Rick approaches the game the same way he approached journalism: observe closely, ask the right questions, and never trust the first story you’re told — especially on the river.

Rick came to poker the long way around. After years of playing online, in local casinos, with a poker league and at home games, in 2015 following retirement he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada (the poker equivalent of moving up to the big leagues).

Rick now plays his favorite game where it was meant to be played: under the bright, neon lights, along the boulevard of broken dreams, and among the most beautiful and popular poker rooms in the world. There, he quickly learned what Las Vegas, and a commitment to poker teaches everyone eventually: the cards don’t care who you are, only what you do when they’re turned face up.

Over the years he's learned to keep meticulous records, trusts math but listens to instinct. Rick understands patience the way seasoned players understand pain — as something you endure now so you can collect later. He studies, adapts, and waits patiently. He doesn’t chase losses. He lets other players do that for him.

Rick studies poker relentlessly, he knows his leaks and that his biggest opponent is often himself. He writes about poker the way he plays it — simple, honest, laced with humor and just dangerous enough to keep things interesting. He knows luck has a seat at every table, but skill decides who gets to stay and pay the rent, month after month. When he’s not playing cards, Rick writes about poker, thinks about poker, or explains poker using phrases that sound suspiciously like life advice. Not simply a "one-trick pony" though, he has other things and interests he spends his time at, which is explained, in part, below.

Favoring small-stakes, No-Limit Texas Hold’em, Rick respects the legends, and maintains that hoodies, sunglasses, the chatty Cathies, and bad beat stories are all needless distractions to his favorite game. His motto is simple and timeless:

“Play fewer hands. Make better decisions, and let the rest take care of itself.”

Rick believes that remembering and honoring those who came before us keeps their stories alive and reminds us that our own lives are part of a much longer journey. The past isn’t gone — it lives on in the stories and the people we choose to remember. Rick began his research as a pre-teen, beginning a more than 60-year adventure into carefully documenting his family’s genealogy and history. The still-growing Clearfield Descendants website is the result of that lifelong dedication and contains more than 26,000 individuals from over 9,500 families. Today their descendants reach across, and to every corner of the United States, and around the world. Rick, his children, and grandchildren share blood ties with most of them.

Goodreads is the world’s largest online community for readers and book recommendations. There people discover books they love and then share what they’ve read. When Rick isn’t writing, he’s often reading. His Goodreads page contains a growing personal record of many of the books he has read over the decades. While not a complete list, it reflects the wide range of authors, subjects, interests and ideas that have influenced and helped shape the person Rick is today.
