ABOUT 101+ POKER TIPS
See why players are calling Rick's new book their go-to field manual for navigating the mean streets of poker. These reviews from fellow grinders and readers highlight how 101+ Poker Tips has provided the immediate edge needed to help turn the tide at the tables.
"No matter how much time you put into studying poker "in the lab", there's no substitute for experience at the tables. Rick has decades of experience, and while he's not a professional poker player, he's learned quite a bit over his time spent at the felt. As he says in his intro for How to Use this Book, "This book isn't a lecture, it's a conversation... and the lessons don't expire." As a fellow serious, recreational poker player, Rick's tips are fully relatable, resonating powerfully specifically because they come "from a guy like me" rather than a high-stakes crusher or professional poker coach. This is a book you won't pick up to read just once!" --- Robbie Strazynski, Founder, Cardplayerlifestyle.com
"I love this book, and have read it over and over. It’s well constructed and the best book for a fundamental understanding of how to win. Easy and pithy to read, this book is full of gems! I’m on my fourth read, attempting to seek perfection." --- Jimmy F., Lifetime Professional Poker Player (Las Vegas, NV)
“Being a woman, in this male dominated game, I found this book very helpful. While a lot of my friends and their husbands play the game, I had no clue as to how to play poker myself. After picking up Rick's book, I found it insightful and easy to read. Just reading through it, I can imagine the improved advantage I’ll have playing with my friends. I can’t wait to ask them if I can play a few hands and join in the fun.“ --- Frances T., (Las Vegas, NV)
"These tips REALLY WORK! I’ve used many of them and it has helped my game tremendously." --- Dino B. (Denver, CO)
"When I first met Rick in 2015, I thought, 'This guy won’t last six months.' In Las Vegas most people who move here to play poker don’t. I was wrong. Rick put in the time, paid his dues, and here he is, all these years later, still standing, and beating the games he frequents. He did it the hard way: by chasing knowledge wherever it lived. From legendary players, and cash game pros, to the grinders playing for bread, butter, and rent — he mined lessons from the who’s who of the poker world. He also learned the way all of us eventually do — by making mistakes and surviving them. This book is the result of all of that: the studying, the listening, the losses, and the lessons. Make these tips part of your game and you’ll save yourself the years Rick spent learning them the hard way." --- Alexander L., Poker Grinder (Las Vegas, NV)
"This book's a very easy, and fun read. Well organized and full of useful tips that will undoubtedly improve your game. I consider it a must-read and will refer to it frequently as I work toward increasing my poker profits." --- Dave M., (The Villages, FL)

FROM THE AUTHOR

Poker has a funny way of shrinking the planet. One moment you’re sitting down at a table in Las Vegas, the next you’re swapping stories with someone from places like Tokyo, Sydney, Seattle, Berlin, Boston, São Paulo, Savannah, or a myriad of other places you’ve never been to or even heard of.
Different accents, different climates, different currencies, different customs … but it's the same deck of cards. What a blessing, and a learning experience, this has been in my life.
This little book has already traveled farther than I have. It can be found in places as far away as South America, Europe, Asia and beyond. It's for all players, from all walks of life, who are serious about improving their game. Whether you play home games or grind it out in casinos, if you’re looking for a concise, practical guide, you’re in the right place.
Poker isn’t easy. It can be learned, but never conquered.
Let me be clear right up front: I’m no know-it-all. I’ll never claim to be. I’m a low-stakes player who’s been at this game for nearly twenty years, and at some point I did the smartest — and dumbest — thing possible: I moved to Las Vegas! The loudest, toughest poker town on the planet. I’ve played in massive rooms and legendary casinos, where every table has a history and every chair has a story. Through it all, one thing never changed… I still love the game.
When I first arrived, I thought I knew poker. Vegas and a few of my opponents laughed. Then they took my money. Yeah, “welcome to Las Vegas Boulevard… the boulevard of broken dreams!”
If I wanted to survive — let alone improve — I had to check my ego at the door, accept losing, and become a student again. So I studied harder, read relentlessly, questioned everything I thought I knew, and leaned on poker friends willing to share their wisdom.
These 101+ tips aren’t theory. They’re paid for in bruises, scars, blood, sweat, and yes, more than a few tears. They’re lessons learned the hard way, usually after midnight, when the room smells like regret, and the cards stop being polite.

Over these long years I compiled a series of notes, ideas, reminders, and tactics — things that actually worked. Stuff I wish I’d known sooner. I’m still a student, with miles on the poker odometer and a cluttered mind full of stories, quotes and bitter lessons. If you’re looking for shortcuts, you won’t find them here. I didn’t get any, so why should you? But if you’re looking for the truth, you’re welcome to learn from my mistakes. I already paid the tuition.
I’ve been paying rake since 2009. My journey took me from online poker to local leagues, home games, musty card rooms, and casinos across the country, and finally to the glitter, glam and the grind of Las Vegas.
Poker fascinates me because it mirrors life, risk, psychology, and consequence. We speak its language every day without noticing. “The buck stops here,” and “poker face” along with a myriad of other sayings were born at the table. Life, like poker, is played with incomplete information and at real stakes.
Long-term success at the game doesn’t come from luck, but from decision-making, hand after hand, session after session. Luck is more like road conditions. Sometimes the road is smooth. Sometimes it’s full of potholes. You don’t control that, but a skilled driver still gets farther than an unskilled one, especially over long distances. Bad players can win sessions. Good players win month after month, year after year.
I’m lucky to play this game in Las Vegas, where the lights never go out, the cards never stop flying and the lessons are relentless. Here, doctors, mechanics, grinders, millionaires, the broke, and even the homeless all sit down at the poker table as equals — at least for a moment.
Poker taught me patience, humility, and accountability. It also gave me good friends, the kind who help you reclaim your dignity after a brutal 2 a.m. session.
Here’s the truth some players don’t want to hear: it’s not the cards, the dealer, or bad luck that determine your long-term results. It’s the person in the mirror.
I wrote this book not to preach. Not to posture. Not to tell you I’ve got it all figured out, because poker has a way of humbling anyone who thinks they do. I wrote it to share what I’ve come to understand, and what it can offer your game. I sincerely hope it helps. Now, let’s get better at this game we all love.
All the best,

Rick Gleason
